Plastic surgery is not merely for a select and wealthy few. In the United States alone, over 11.5 million cosmetic procedures -
both surgical and non-surgical - were performed during 2006, ranging from Botox injections to tumor removal. That represents a 446
percent increase since 1997. Below are statistics for common procedures.
The top five most popular cosmetic surgery procedures in 2006 were:
- Liposuction - 403,684
- Breast augmentation - 383,886
- Eyelid surgery - 209,999
- Abdominoplasty - 172,457
- Breast Reduction - 145,822
The top five most popular non-surgical procedures in 2006 were:
- Botox - 3.1 million
- Hyaluronic Acid (Hylaform, Restylane) - 1.5 million
- Laser hair removal - 1.4 million
- Microdermabrasion - 993,071
- Laser Skin Resurfacing - 556,172
The top five reconstructive procedures in 2006 were:
- Tumor Removal - 3.9 million
- Laceration Repair - 312,844
- Scar Revision - 164,684
- Hand Surgery - 155,810
- Breast Reduction - 104,455
Ethnicity
People of color accounted for approximately 23 percent of cosmetic procedures in 2006.
Hispanics - 8% in 2006. The top three requested procedures for Hispanics in 2006:
- Breast Augmentation
- Nose Reshaping
- Liposuction
African-Americans - 7% of African-Americans got procedures in 2006.
The top three requested procedures for African-Americans in 2006:

Asian-Americans - 6% of Asians got a procedures in 2006.
